Mustangs Dominate Tri-Match

Paramus, N.J. - On Saturday Oct. 8, 2011 the Montgomery County Community College women's volleyball team competed in a tri-match against the Manor College Blue Jays and the Bergen County College Bulldogs.

The Mustangs faced off against the Blue Jays first, managing a three set with with scores of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-11.

Mustangs Head Coach Misti Volpe said of the win, "The girls started out the competition with an unmatched energy and maintained it throughout the match. In the third set the Blue Jays picked up the intensity and did a good job defending against our offensive arsenal. However, we were able to step up and produce another solid win."

Against the Blue Jays, Brianna Musselman led in kills with 11, followed closely by Bethany Rendemonti with nine. Mel Angelucci led offensively with nine aces. Kaitlynn Franks notched 26 assists in the match.

Angelucci also anchored the defense with eight digs, followed by Kelsey Kowalick with four. In two out of the three sets the Mustangs managed to hit over .300 as a team.

The Mustangs had more difficulty with the second match up of the day, but still came out victorious over the Bulldogs, with set scores of 26-24, 26-28, 25-23 and 25-19.

Leading in kills against the Bulldogs were Brianna Musselman with 18 and Briana Rodrigues with 11. The team had 21 aces in the match, nine of which came from Musselman. Setter Kaitlynn Franks had a season high of 35 assists.

Coach Volpe commented on the day. "Bergen managed to keep our team hitting average at .148 with good defensive efforts. I think the difference in the match was due to our extraordinary defensive attitude. The girls played with a determined intensity and made several game changing defensive plays."

The Mustangs totaled 75 digs against the Bulldogs and had four players end the match with digs in the double digits. Libero Mel Angelucci led with a career high of 23 digs. She was followed by Nikki Reichert with 13, Sam Reeves with 12 and Kelsey Kowalick with 10. Setter Kaitlynn Franks also chipped in with nine digs.
