Women's Soccer Keeps Eye on Playoffs in 2010
The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women’s soccer team is looking forward to the 2010 season with much excitement. In its second season, the squad is looking to build on last year’s third place finish in Region XIX Division III of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Optimism is abundant among the Mustangs, who will be competing against their conference rivals from last year, plus three additional Division III opponents, Cumberland County College, Harcum College and Raritan Valley Community College. The team also looks forward to the challenge of taking on five Division I programs, including Cecil County College, Delaware Technical College-Terry Campus, Sussex County College, Community College of Baltimore-Essex and Community College of Morris. For the Mustangs, a strong regular season schedule is essential to the team’s preparedness for potential playoff action against nationally ranked Division III opponents Ocean County College, ranked third, and Camden County College, ranked sixth.
The Mustangs’ key returning offensive player is forward Jeanine Mason (Methacton), who was the team’s leading scorer and an All-Region XIX first team selection last year. Mason will be joined on the front line by freshmen Alex Caizzo and Malorie Waters. The inside midfield will feature returning starter Carla Sirak (Ewing), who will play alongside transfer Megan Doran (Lansdale Catholic). On the outside will be a rotation of returning player Sydnee Ryan and newcomers Morgan Deily, Samantha Keegan and Samantha Caltabiano. The defense will be anchored by second year players Stephanie Wasniewski (Souderton), Stephanie Lechner (Lansdale Catholic) and Katelyn Martin (Boyertown), with other players expected to contribute as well. In goal for the Mustangs will be Mary Grace Lux and Martin.
Coach Timothy McNally is looking forward to the potential of this team to best last year’s performance. “The keys to improving on last year’s 9-5 record will be how quickly we can function as a cohesive unit and how we hand the uncertainty road trips can bring.”
The Mustangs’ path to the playoffs runs through Ocean, Camden, Brookdale Community College and Middlesex County College; teams which were challenging last year, but could potentially be even stronger with a good recruiting class this year. Coach McNally is up for the challenge. “We are optimistic about our chances of qualifying for the playoffs, and with a little luck, could find ourselves in the Region XIX Championship game.”
The Mustangs women’s soccer team will host Manor College for its first game of the season on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
