Women's Basketball Downs Colonials
Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women’s basketball team dominated the Community College of Philadelphia Colonials in a 69-11 competition Wednesday.
The Colonials got off to a good start posting to the board first with a layup, but were unable to gain momentum off the play. An early time out by Mustangs Head Coach Kelly Donohue gave her team the ignition it needed to thwart the Colonials’ early efforts.
Janay Winston led the charge coming out of the time out with five steals and a pair of baskets, helping the Mustangs charge ahead to a quick 13-4 lead. The Colonials fought to regain control of the game, but could not keep up with the Mustangs' pace. By half, the Mustangs were clearly on top at a 44-9 advantage.
Mercedes Harris opened up the second half scoring with an under-the-basket shot, giving the Mustangs a boost right away. The Colonials faced further frustration when their starting center fouled out at 18:35, leaving them with no subs for the remainder of the game.
The Mustangs continued to dominate the match, allowing the Colonials only two points in the second half, earned with a layup at 10:13. The game concluded with a 69-11 decision for the Mustangs, the team’s ninth win in a row.
All 12 members of the Mustangs squad contributed to the win. Harris led the team in points with 19, followed by Laeeqa Collins-Presley with 10, Winston with 9, Remi Gerwitz with 8 and Angela Branigan with 7. Winston led the team in steals with 7, followed closely by Gerwitz with 6. In rebounds Angelique Walton posted 8, Branigan earned 7 and Alison Hershman earned 6.
The Mustangs’ record is now 9-1 overall, 5-0 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC). Next, the team will travel to Luzerne County Community College on Saturday, Dec. 11.
