Mustangs Defeat Trailblazers 74-68
Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women’s basketball team finished their winning season to prevail over the Luzerne County Community College Trailblazers. After 10 minutes in the first half, the Trailblazers’ path would be cut short by the Mustangs offense.
The Mustangs posted immediately after the tip-off, but both teams struggle to score again for the next four minutes. The action picked up again with the Trailblazers briefly taking the lead only to be overcome by the Mustangs' determination to take the win for their last game of the season.
Team assists and steals led by Mercedes Harris and Janay Winston pushed the Mustangs into the lead, capping it off with a 3-point shot by Remi Gerwitz. The Trailblazers left the first half at a deficit of 42-28.
The Mustangs, plagued with defensive problems throughout the game, built on their lead and commanded the second half with consistent scoring drives and 3-point shots. Falling short on assists, rebounds and steals, the Trailblazers were only visible in the rear-view mirror by the end of the second half.
Mercedes Harris, a sophomore from Norristown, played another outstanding double digit scoring game and led the team with 26 total points and 19 rebounds. Teammate Janay Winston, a sophomore from Phoenixville, also scored a double-double with 22 total points and 10 rebounds. Pitching in was Remi Gerwitz, scoring a total of 13 points.
The Mustangs congratulate sophomores Carla Sirak, Mary Grace Lux, Janay Winston and Mercedes Harris for a successful 2010-11 season.
The Mustangs’ record is now 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference.
