Women's Basketball Secures Win Over Cougars
Nanticoke, Pa. � The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women�s basketball team earned a close 57-54 win over the Lehigh Carbon Community College Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead and held it for most of the game. At points in the competition, it appeared that the Mustangs could pull away. However, the Cougars never allowed more than a 12-point lead and were able to close the gap repeatedly.
Down to the wire, the Cougars surpassed the Mustangs to lead 54-53 with a minute left. The Mustangs were able to answer with a basket to steal back the lead at 55-54.
On the next Cougars possession, the team put up a shot but missed. Mercedes Harris grabbed the rebound and headed down the court to put the final nail the Cougars� coffin. Harris was fouled and awarded two foul shots with seven seconds left. She made both to secure the win.
In the competition Harris led the Mustangs with 27 points, followed by Janay Winston with 12. Carla Sirak played exceptionally well defensively, providing the Mustangs solid leadership off-ball.
