Women's Basketball Tops Skylanders
Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs defeated the Sussex County Community College Skylanders 53-27 on Saturday, Jan. 15.
The Mustangs opened up scoring and kept their opponent scoreless for six minutes, to build an 8-1 opening lead. The Skylanders put forth a valiant effort, but were dominated by the Mustangs, who racked up a 29-9 lead by the end of the first half.
The Skylanders started the second half with possession but were unable to convert on the opportunity. Mustangs second year players Mercedes Harris and Janay Winston set up a combination play to post two on the board, starting an offensive drive for the Mustangs. In a second play by the duo, a long pass assist from Harris to Winston for a layup at the 15:00 mark secured a solid Mustangs lead.
The game concluded in a 53-27 win for the Mustangs. Harris led the team in points with 14 and in rebounds with nine. Winston notched 12 points and Laeeqa Collins-Pressley added nine. Also performing well were Mary Grace Lux (Bishop McDevitt), who earned six rebounds for the team and Remi Gerwitz, who had two blocks.
The Mustangs are now 12-4 overall and 7-0 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference. Next the team will play Bucks County Community College at home on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
