Mustangs Beat Colonials 83-74

Philadelphia, Pa. – In their last regular season game of the season, the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs beat the Community College of Philadelphia Colonials 83-74.

The teams met on the Colonials’ home court Wednesday evening in their second match up this season. The Colonials dominated the game in the first five minutes of action, leaving the Mustangs down 8-16 by the 15:00 minute mark. However, the Colonials were unable to keep up that pace for the whole game and the Mustangs kept their deficit to less than 10 points throughout the first half.

Going into the second half the Mustangs were down 39-44, but at 15:10 left in the game Kaleigh Prough (Methacton) made a layup for the Mustangs to tie up the game at 50 apiece.

The game was all tied up for the next seven minutes until Jennifer Kopsie (Plymouth Whitemarsh) sunk a 3-pointer to put the Mustangs ahead 67-64. Thirty seconds later, Philadelphia’s 32 fouled out of the game, giving the Mustangs the momentum they needed to secure a solid lead.

Once in the lead, the Mustangs refused to yield, never giving the Colonials a chance to catch up and ultimately took the victory with a final score of 83-74.

Mercedes Harris (Norristown) posted an outstanding offensive effort, notching a season high for the Mustangs of 43 points and 21 rebounds. Janay Winston (Phoenixville) had a well-rounded game with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and no turnovers. Kaleigh Prough (Methacton) contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds for the Mustangs as well. On the other half of the court the team was just as solid, thanks to strong defensive games from Ayana Allen (Abington), Carla Sirak (Ewing), and Jennifer Kopsi (Plymouth Whitemarsh).

The Mustangs ended their first official intercollegiate regular season 12-7 overall and 10-4 in the EPCC. This qualifies the Mustangs for the EPCC playoffs, which will begin next week.
