Mustangs Double-Bageled in Luzerne
After getting blanked earlier in the day, the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs softball team looked to recover in Game Two. Instead, they were shut down again by Luzerne County Community College (Trailblazers) and suffered a humbling 12-0 defeat.
As was true from the first contest, both teams were scoreless after the first frame with not a lot of offense from either side. That changed in the second, however, as the home Trailblazers crossed the plate three times on as many hits to take a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs battled through the next inning, keeping their deficit the same, but were never able to generate any baserunners to cut into the score. Following another missed opportunity for them at the top of the fourth, the flood gates opened up at the bottom of the inning where the hosts displayed a nine-run barrage to seal the game. The Trailblazers registered seven hits during the inning, and benefited from the long-ball again as Nichole McNair slammed a three-run homer during the fifteen batter onslaught. Their starting pitcher Danielle Tuzinski was solid throughout, as she allowed only 2 hits in the five innings of play.
In back-to-back games, the Mustangs were unable to establish virtually any offense. Holly Mara and Sammi Kidd provided the only hits for the team, as they each singled to spoil what would otherwise have been a flawless effort from the Trailblazers. Starting pitcher Sammi Kidd (2-1) started well, but struggled in the latter stages and suffered her first loss on the year.
The Mustangs (2-2) will now travel to Vineland, NJ on Tuesday, April 2nd to take on Cumberland County College. Cumberland leads the all-time series, 4-1, which includes a sweep the last time the teams met in 2011.
