Mustangs Split Double Header with Dukes

Blue Bell, Pa. The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs womens softball team split a double-header with the Cumberland County College Dukes, winning game one 8-7 and losing game two 1-10, on Thursday, Apr. 15, 2010.

In game one the Dukes shot out to a strong lead but the Mustangs were able to overcome a 7-1 deficit with the help of a fourth inning rally. By the top of the seventh inning, the Mustangs had closed the gap to 7-6 and were able to hold off the Dukes. Up to bat in the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs took advantage of their final scoring chance, bringing in two unearned runs to win the game 8-7.

The games offensive highlights include two hits from Mary Thornton (Wissahickon), a triple and two RBIs from Stef Lechner (Lansdale Catholic), and one RBI from Samantha Guertin (North Penn). Janay Winston (Phoenixville) and Katelyn Mathe (North Penn) scored the tying and winning runs for the Mustangs.

Game two was a repeat performance by the Dukes, who scored nine runs before the Mustangs were able to get on the board. But the Mustangs were unable to come back from behind as they did in the game one. Two subsequent doubles from Katelyn Martin (Boyertown) and Melissa Alpuche (Lansdale Catholic) allowed the Mustangs one run, but that was the only success of the game. The final score was Dukes 11, Mustangs 1.

The Mustangs softball team is now 9-15 overall (3-11 NJCAA Region XIX Division III). Next the team will travel to Burlington County College for a double header on Saturday, Apr. 17. Game time is 12:00 p.m.
