Mustangs Win a Pair Over Buccaneers
Mays Landing, N.J. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women’s softball team defeated the Buccaneers of Atlantic Cape Community College 9-8 and 11-6 in a double header on Saturday, Apr. 10, 2010.
In game one, the Mustangs and Buccaneers played evenly until the Mustangs took the lead over the Buccaneers by scoring six runs in a third inning rally. The Buccaneers struggled to catch up, closing the gap to one run by the bottom of the seventh inning. Up only 9-8 and facing a bases-loaded situation, the Mustangs defense pulled through with a double play to close out the game and take the win.
In game two, the Mustangs faced a three run deficit going into the sixth inning. However, the team was able to score four runs in the sixth and then repeated the performance in the seventh. The offensive effort brought the Mustangs out of a 3-6 hole, to win the game 11-6.
Overall, the Mustangs offense posted a strong showing, boasting six hits, five RBIs, and two runs by Janay Winston (Phoenixville); five hits and four RBIs by Katelyn Mullen (Collegeville); two hits and two RBIs by Katelyn Mathe (North Penn); and three hits each from Mary Thornton (Wissahickon) and Katelyn Martin (Boyertown). Lisamarie Murray (North Penn) was the winning pitcher in game one and game two was won by Melissa Alpuche (Lansdale Catholic), who issued four strike outs.
The Mustangs softball team is now 6-10 overall (2-6 NJCAA Region XIX Division III). Next the team hosts Middlesex County College for a double header on Sunday, Apr. 11. Game time is 12:00 p.m.
