Men's Soccer Qualifies for NJCAA Region 19 Playoffs
Blue Bell, Pa. - The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's soccer team qualified for the NJCAA Region 19 playoffs Wednesday, with a 9-3 win over the Northampton Community College Spartans.
The Mustangs were able to capitalize on muddy conditions, as they unleashed a fury of shots on the mud-drenched Spartans goalkeeper early in the first half.
Sophomore captain JJ Natale opened the scoreboard for the Mustangs just seven minutes into play, when the Spartans goalkeeper slipped and knocked Natale's shot in behind him. Natale scored a solid goal four minutes later.
Up 2-0, the Mustangs kept the pressure on but the Spartans were able to hold the team at two for over 15 minutes. Finally 28 minutes into play the Mustangs Nick Igbokwe scored off a follow up of a shot by Ali Ali.
Four minutes later, Ali sent in a shot on goal which was headed in by Joe Mitsch. Five minutes later defenseman Brian Maguire sent a pass up to Natale for a goal that completed the athlete's hat trick.
Once the Mustangs had secured a 5-0 lead, Mustangs Head Coach Matt Giordano started placing defenders on the attacking line. Maguire scored off a direct kick after a foul outside the box.
Just before half time, the Mustangs gave away the shut out, with a goal from the Spartans, sending the teams into the second half with a score of 6-1.
In the second half the Mustangs were tasked with defending the muddiest side of the field. The team let up two more goals, but not without scoring three more themselves.
At 53:00 Natale knocked in his fourth and final goal of the day, then at 68:00, Ali snagged another goal for the Mustangs, tipping in a cross ball from Musa Ahamed.
To round out out the day, with just 15 seconds left in play, Maguire slid in front of the goal to score a second time, sealing his team's 9-3 victory.
"I am very proud of the team and what they accomplished," commented Coach Giordano. "This is huge improvement from last year, as well as an historic mark for the program."
