Men's Soccer Tops Panthers 3-1

Paterson, N.J. - On Saturday, the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's soccer team traveled to Paterson, N.J. for a soggy battle with the Passaic County Community College Panthers.

The Mustangs showed up and immediately took control of the game, dominating with possession play and an on-slaught of offensive opportunities in the first half. The Mustangs' first goal came about ten minutes into play when second year sophomore Nick Igbokwe played the ball through the Panther defense to Kas Fazliu for a tip in.

Down by one, the Panthers defense stepped it up to send the Mustangs into the second half with only a 1-0 lead. However, the second half brought the Mustangs a number of offensive chances as the team opened up the play and tired down the Panthers' defense.

Fazliu was unstoppable in the second half, racking up two more goals for the Mustangs to round out his hat trick performance. His second goal came off a long ball, served up over the defense by second year sophomore JJ Natale. Fazliu chipped in the ball just above the keeper's reach to knock the Mustangs ahead by two.

Just minutes later, Ali Ali set up Fazliu for his third goal, punching the ball out wide for the offensive threat. Fazliu carried the ball into the box, beating two defenders and sinking the ball deep in the net past the keeper to bump up the Mustangs to a 3-0 lead.

Towards the end of the game, the Panthers were able to put one past the Mustangs' defense, which had solidly shut down the Panthers' attack for most of the game. However, Mustangs Head Coach Matt Giordano welcomed the 3-1 win.

"We really needed this win, " said Giordano. "After last week's loss, the team was really hungry to get out there and get a 'W' under our belt. I was especially happy about the offensive chances we created and that we were able to capitalize on some. I hope we can carry this momentum into the weeks ahead."

Next the Mustangs play away at Bucks County Community College at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2011.
