Mustangs Best Silver Knights 88-71

Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men’s basketball team earned their 13th win of the season with an 88-71 win over the Central Pennsylvania Silver Knights Thursday.

Dominic Oliver (Cheltenham) opened up the scoring for the Mustangs with a layup at 19:03 but the Silver Knights answered back right away. The visiting team kept pace with the Mustangs through most of the first half until the Mustangs gained a 7 point lead with 8:00 minutes to go.

Determined to prevent the Mustangs from running away with the game, the Silver Knights pumped up their intensity and were able to come from behind to tie the game up 33-33 with 3:33 left in the first half. But their effort was not enough to overcome the Mustangs, who inched back into the lead just before half time, sending the Silver Knights to the locker room at a deficit of 41-38.

The second half brought the Silver Knights some frustration early on as the Mustangs widened the gap to a 9 point lead. However, the Silver Knights did not give in and found themselves with a 1 point advantage (53-52) at the 13:50 mark. The teams battled it out in front of a rowdy crowd for the rest of the half, flip-flopping the lead at least 5 times. Neither team was able to take more than a 3 point lead until Adam Jones (North Penn) put the Mustangs ahead 65-59 with 7:21 left in the game. Two minutes later the Mustangs had an 11 point lead, an advantage which the Silver Knights were unable to dissolve.

The final buzzer sounded with an 88-71 Mustangs victory posted on the scoreboard. Jones led the Mustangs in points with 17, followed by Kenny Walton (Germantown) with 13, and Oliver, Robert Fisher (Germantown), Michael Acquaviva (Plymouth Whitemarsh) with 10 points each.

The Mustangs are now 13-4 overall and 11-1 in the EPCC. Next, the team will host Johnson College at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 16.
