Mustangs Defeat Phantoms for 12th Win

Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men’s basketball team defeated the Delaware County Community College Phantoms Thursday Jan. 12, 2010.

The Mustangs were off to a good start, winning the opening tip off and posting to the scoreboard first with a 3 point shot from Dominic Oliver (Cheltenham). But the Phantoms struck back with aggression, preventing the Mustangs from scoring for the next four minutes while racking up a 10 point lead. The Mustangs were finally able to sink a shot at 15:08 but the Phantoms kept up the pace topping the Mustangs by 13 at one point.

But the Mustangs Head Coach Denny Surovec adjusted his strategy, pushing his team to be faster than the Phantoms. After that the Mustangs crept back into the game and finally pulled ahead with 4:29 left in the first half. The Mustangs were able to hold the advantage at 39-38 going into the second half of the game.

The Phantoms came on strong at the start of the second half, scoring first and jumping ahead of the Mustangs by one. But the Mustangs once again regained control of the game scoring eight points in a row before allowing their opponent to sink a basket.

The Mustangs continued to dominate the second half of the game, at one point leading by as much as 15 points. With 18 seconds left of the clock the Phantoms scored a 3 pointer to finish the game 10 points behind the Mustangs. The final score was Mustangs 86, Phantoms 76. High scorers for the Mustangs were Tabias Thompson (PET Charter) with 18 points and Jeff Hurst (Souderton) and Michael Acquaviva (Plymouth Whitemarsh) with 14 apiece.

The Mustangs are now 12-4 overall and 10-1 in the EPCC.
