Recap: Mustangs Split Tri-Match, Halt Slide

BLUE BELL, Pa. - Entering Saturday's Tri-Match, the Mustangs were the last team to defeat the 5th-ranked Northampton Community College Spartans. Unfortunately, that victory came almost three years ago - October 17, 2011.

Head Coach Rita Rivera's squad had hopes of doing it again as her Mustangs and the Spartans tangled in the first match. The Mustangs held their own early, matching the Spartans point for point early in the first set, only to lose, 25-10. The Mustangs hung in and battled but eventually dropped the next two sets by 25-12 and 25-9 scores.

Setter/outside hitter Anna Mitchell led the team with 6 assists in the match. The team leader in digs was middle hitter Colby Shackelford with 8. And setter/outside hitter Nicole Fusco led the team with 5 kills.

The loss was the Mustangs' fourth in a row.

However, the team rebounded as they closed out the Tri-Match with a straight-set victory over Community College of Philadelphia, downing the Colonials 25-10, 25-17, and 25-13.

The Colonials led for a majority of the second set before the Mustangs staged an impressive rally.

Mitchell and libero Mary Plunkett led the way with 7 aces apiece. Mitchell also led the way with 5 kills. Plunkett and middle hitter Colby Shackelford were each credited with 6 digs.

The Mustangs are back on the road for a match Tuesday evening at Harrisburg Area Community College. They return home Thursday evening to face Delaware County Community College.
