The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs split their Saturday trimatch against the Northampton Community College Spartans and Lackawanna College Falcons.
The Mustangs faced off against the Region 19 DIII Spartans in the first set of the day.
"Our Mustangs started out slow in the matchup, but pushed themselves to play harder as the match progressed," said Coach Volpe.
The Spartans kept the Mustangs offensive efforts at just a .141 hitting average overall for the match. The offense was led by returning second year player Liz Herezi who averaged a .364 with 10 kills. Second year athletes Kendall Gazzo and Alex Griffin added seven and five kills respectively. The Mustangs tallied six aces over the three-game set,three3 from Herezi and three from first year Courtney Gill. Setter Jenn Casatelli pushed out 20 assists.
Defensively the Mustangs tallied 37 digs. Herezi anchored the defense and achieved a double-double for the day with her combination 10 kills and 10 digs. Maggie Lesinski followed with eight digs and Gill, Gazzo and Griffin chipped in six apiece.
Despite the effort, the Mustangs lost to Northampton in three with scores of 19-25, 22-25 and 15-25.
The second matchup of the day faired better for the Mustangs resulting in a three-set win over the Falcons, with set scores of 25-8, 25-15, and 25-17.
The team hitting average rounded out at a .211 with a total of 20 kills. First Year Jodi Hillsinger anchored the team with seven kills on 15 attempts and a .467 average. Gazzo trailed with five kills and a .333 average. Herezi ran the offensive effort and finished with 14 assists.
Second year players Gazzo, Herezi and Griffin anchored the serving lineup for the Mustangs totaling 21 aces. Griffin led with 10, while Gazzo tallied seven and Herezi had four.
The Mustangs defense saw a total of 16 digs, six from Griffin and five from first year Julie Hunsberger.
The Mustangs will host their 2nd ever annual Alumni matchup Tuesday evening September 24th at 7:00 p.m.
