The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs bounced back quickly from their opening game loss, with a win over the Lehigh Carbon Community College Cougars Thursday night.
In a remarkable three-game match, the Mustangs dominated with winning scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-11.
"The Cougars entered our gym looking stronger than last year," commented Mustangs Head Coach Misti Volpe. "But our Mustangs were determined to win."
Offensively the Mustangs were led by first year players Courtney Gill and Maggie Lesinski. Gill collected seven kills on 10 attempts with no errors, managing a .700 hitting average. Lesinski added six kills on nine attempts with a .444 average.
Returning sophomore Liz Herezi also contributed five kills with a .357 average, while sophomore setter Jenn Casatelli dished out 21 assists for the evening.
Gill said of the match, "I think we really worked together as a team. We went out and just had fun playing a great sport that we all love. I think that's what led us to the win."
Lesinski led in the middle on defense with eight digs and four blocks. Gill and Casatelli added seven digs apiece. Kendall Gazzo, opposite Lesinski in the middle, chipped in six digs and two blocks.
"We took a long look at the strengths of different lineups we had been experimenting with and I believe we found one that suits the strengths of each player on our team," said Volpe. "The girls really found their rhythm as a team in this match. I am excited to see how the rest of the season plays out."
The Mustangs will take the court again at Manor College on Tuesday Sept. 10. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
