The Mustangs volleyball team finished its season Saturday, October 27 in a three-set loss against the Northampton Community College Spartans. Game Scores were 19-25, 10-25 and 12-25.
The Mustangs started the match with unanswered energy and almost pulled away with a win in the first game, but the Spartans managed to climb past the Mustangs.
"Our Mustangs faced a lot of obstacles this past season including season ending injuries to two of our starting players but nothing quieted their spirit," commented Head Coach Misti Volpe. "I am confident that our girls played with everything they had, and I am proud to have been their coach this past year" said Volpe of her teams' efforts."
Offensively the Mustangs were led in numbers by a three-way tie amongst Alex Griffin, Liz Herezi and Jen Casatelli. Griffin managed the highest average amongst the hitters with a .571 for the day. The team setter, Nikki Reichert, also chipped in three kills for the day with a .750 average. The Spartans put up a fierce defensive effort and, as a whole, the Mustangs team collected just 18 kills.
The Mustangs defense picked up 28 digs and were again led by Griffin who picked up 11. Libero Kelsey Kowalick and fellow outside Liz Herezi each chipped in 5 digs. Service-reception efforts were spread across the board with three players performing in the double digits and the team's average percentage performance landing at 90% efficiency. Kowalick lead with 19 passes, Niki Gass and Herezi followed with 17 and 15 balls respectively.
Freshman outside Alex Griffin was selected to the Region XIX All-Tournament Team for her performance for the day.
"Alex had a great game and I'm happy that she was selected for All Tournament," said Volpe. "She's been a solid contributor all season and it is great to see her efforts come into the spot light."
Coach Volpe said of the Mustangs' season end, "Our girls are sad the season is over, but they are already geared up to start playing in the offseason. They're already organizing themselves for local leagues and tournaments and talking about our upcoming spring season. I expect great things to come next year."
