Game Recap: Women's Soccer Defeats Middlesex
The Mustangs women's soccer team defeated the Middlesex County College Colts 3-0 on Saturday, bumping up their record to 2-1-1.
The Mustangs played a solid 90 minute game that resulted in the team outshooting the Colts 25-9. Each player on the Mustangs roster contributed to the win with aggressive play and smart passing.
About 20 minutes into the first half freshman forward Mallory Mugnier scored off a crossed ball from sophomore midfielder Stephanie Martinez to put the Mustangs up 1-0. The goal opened the flood gates for the Mustangs, who amped up the offensive pressure for the remainder of the half. With less than five minutes left before the half time break, Mugnier knocked in another goal to set the Mustangs ahead by two.
In the second half the Mustangs kept the pressure on. With 10 minutes left in play, Mugnier struck out on a break away run to knock in her third goal of the day, securing a hat trick and her team's victory. The game ended in a 3-0 decision for the Mustangs.
Mugnier led the team with 15 shots. The freshman played remarkably well under pressure up high."Mallory was on fire today and earned some well deserved goals," commented Mustangs Head Coach Tom Haney. "She was able to capitalize on a lot of great advancing plays from our midfielders and defenders, who also showed outstanding teamwork and skill today."
Mugnier is from Glenside, Pa and is a graduate of Abington High School. She is currently working towards earning her Associate's degree in Elementary Education at Montgomery County Community College. A starting forward for the Mustangs, Mugnier continues to be an offensive threat to Mustangs opponents.
Also noteworthy was a solid midfield performance from sophomore Liz Keegan, who usually serves as the Mustangs' goal keeper. In goal for the win was freshman Amanda Schultz, who made nine saves to earn her first shut out of the season.
