Game Recap: Women Win 2nd Straight, Top VFMC 50-47

WAYNE, Pa. - The Mustangs women's basketball team placed three players in double figures on Tuesday to defeat the host Trojans of Valley Forge Military College 50-47. The win was Montgomery's second straight and third overall for the season.

Freshman Tayler Nicholson led the Mustangs with 11 points, while sophomores India Williams and Kim Pessoa added 10 apiece as the Mustangs overcame another slow start.

"We continue to get off to slow starts, but the girls bounced back," said interim head coach Francine Roseman. "Tayler came off the bench and her shooting got us going, while India controlled the game until she fouled out with 2:37 left in the game."

Trailing 22-20 at the half, the Mustangs controlled play in the second half and led by as many as eight points before the Trojans cut the deficit to the game-ending three-point margin.

Both teams were in the zone shooting, as both shot over 70 percent from the floor. Valley Forge owned a slight edge, converting 19-of-26 (73.1%), while Montgomery hit on 18-of-25 (72%). The Trojans amassed 30 points in the paint, compared to 18 for the Mustangs.

Montgomery pulled down 23 rebounds -- compared to the Trojans' 12 -- thanks in part to Alexandria Somers and Bryanna Lacey, who combined for 13. Lacey added 8 points, while Somers chipped in 6. Evelyn Ogden added 5 points.

"We are continuing to improve," Roseman said.

Next up for the Mustangs is a Thursday night game at Middlesex County College against the Blue Colts, ranked No. 10 in the nation in the NJCAA. Tip-off is set for 5 PM.
