Game Recap: Simmons, Mustangs Earn 1st Win

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - After dropping the season opener, the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women's basketball team rebounded nicely with a 64-51 road win over Lehigh Carbon Community College on Tuesday.

Freshman center Alexandria Somers led the way with 20 points, while sophomore forward Kim Pessoa came off the bench with a double-double of 18 points and 21 rebounds.

"It was a great effort tonight by our team," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Vince Simmons, who earned the first win of his collegiate coaching career. "It felt good to get the first win under our belt."

The Mustangs led the Cougars 23-18 at halftime and extended that margin by game's end.

A closer look at the statistics reveals just how the Mustangs secured the victory. Despite being out-rebounded, 66-55, the Mustangs shot 44.4 percent from the field, compared to the Cougars' 27.2 percent. At the foul line, Montgomery converted 16 of 22 free throws, while Lehigh Carbon struggled mightily in connecting on just 7 of 19 opportunities.

The Mustangs women's basketball team hosts Atlantic Cape Community College in the home opener Thursday at 6 pm.
