The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women's basketball team lost a close match up with the Hawks of Harrisburg Area Community College Saturday afternoon.
The game started off slowly for both teams. After eight minutes the teams had only scored a combined 15 points. The Hawks held an advantage for most of the first half and began to pull away with five minutes remaining before half time.
However, after an injury timeout the Mustangs regrouped to close in on the Hawks. With three minutes left in the period the Mustangs rallied to cut the Hawks' lead down to 27-23.
In the second half the Hawks posted to the board first but the Mustangs came on full force to tie the game up 32-32 at the 13:30 mark. The game remained close with the lead trading hands a half dozen times before the Hawks pulled ahead in the last 90 seconds of the game.
Unable to stage a recovery with just seconds remaining, the Mustangs took a 52-57 defeat.
Dayna McCrewell and Ashley Waters led the Mustangs with 13 points each, followed by Mallory Mugnier with 10. Sophomore Danielle Lillo grabbed 14 rebounds, while McCrewell totaled nine. McCrewell also contributed seven assists in the effort.
