BLUE BELL, Pa. - Back-to-back hits by Anna Morgan and Naomi Jasienski in the fifth inning thwarted Lackawanna pitcher Barb Verrastro's perfect game bid; but was one of few highlights as the Mustangs were swept by the Division II Falcons in a Region XIX doubleheader on Thursday.
First, Morgan broke up the no-hitter with a single. Jasienski then erased the shutout, lacing a triple to plate Morgan with Montgomery's lone run as Lackawanna took the opener, 14-1.
Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held for Falcons' baseball player Shane Rivenburg, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday.
Verrastro, meanwhile, was in the zone striking out 13 Mustangs over five innings in recording her eighth win. The pitcher also had a nice game at the plate, with two runs scored and two RBI.
Montgomery handcuffed itself with four errors in the game. On the mound, Allegra Schnitzel allowed 12 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits over three innings. She also walked six batters.
In Game #2, four more Mustangs' errors turned into runs as the Falcons outscored the hosts 12-3 after two innings and cruised to a 14-3 win.
Montgomery collected six hits in the contest and offensively were aided by three errors by Lackawanna.
Jasienski took the loss, allowing 8 earned runs on 10 hits over three innings. She allowed six walks.
The Mustangs host Ocean County College in a Region XIX doubleheader on Sunday at 12 pm in a special "Strike Out Cancer" game.
