The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs softball team completed their two-game home sweep, by outlasting the Union County College Owls 17-15 in Game Two of the doubleheader.
As the weather continued to wreak havoc on basic team fundamentals, the second game began where the first one had left off; with a scoring frenzy. Quickly, out of the box, the Owls generated an early 4-0 lead. However, the Mustangs responded immediately, and used 13 batters to score eight runs of their own, and establish an 8-4 lead after only the first frame. The Owls battled back, though, and regained the lead (11-8) after three innings. With a couple strong defensive outputs, the Mustangs were able to chip away offensively to tie the game at 11-11. Then, in striking similarity to Game One, they used an impressive six-run outing in the sixth to turn a 12-11 deficit into a commanding 17-12 lead. Although, the Owls would rally for three in the seventh, the Mustangs were not going to be denied victory.
Julia Santaro led the Mustangs with three RBIs, scored three runs, and was a notable two-for-four from the plate (including two stolen bases). Equally as vital to the team's victory was Holly Mara, who was a perfect four-for-four on offense, with two RBIs, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Sammi Kidd (2-0, 5.81 ERA), pitched another solid four innings in relief to record her second win on the year. Other team leaders for the Mustangs included Brandi Clarke (1-for-3, 2 RBIs, R, 1 SB) and Kara McKeon (1-for-4, RBI, R, 2 SBs).
With the win, the Mustangs (2-0) stay undefeated on the young season. It is the team's first sweep of an opponent since last April against Valley Forge Military College. The squad will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Luzerne County Community College on Thursday, March 28th.
