Recap: Mustangs Ride Balanced Scoring To 1st Win

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - Jalil Shafi's double-double led a balanced attack as the men's basketball team recorded its first win of the season -- a 110-89 victory at Lehigh Carbon Community College in Region 19 play on Tuesday night.

Shafi posted game highs with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Anthony Patterson chipped in a double-double of his own with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mustangs past the Cougars, who eliminated Montgomery in a first-round NJCAA Region 19 playoff game last season. The Cougars earned a 69-66 win that Saturday afternoon in February.

But Tuesday night was a different story as Head Men's Basketball Coach Denny Surovec got contributions from all 10 of his players, including six who placed in double figures.

"We had good intensity for most of the night, and we finally knocked down some open shots," Surovec said.

Montgomery led 67-45 at halftime thanks to a 23-5 run over the last five minutes of the first half.

Ryan Brennan scored 18 points thanks to sinking six of nine shots from beyond the arc. Kevin Woods made four of six from three-point range and finished with 16 points. They were followed by Kanen Horton and Nicko Balis with 13 and 10 points respectively. Tyler Armstrong grabbed 10 rebounds and Brendan Watton collected 8 off the glass.

Montgomery shot just over 50 percent from the field and over 53 percent from beyond the arc. Lehigh Carbon had success from three-point range, shooting 52.4 percent (11 of 21), but struggled to convert field goals (35 of 81 - 43.2%). The Cougars also struggled mightily from the foul line, converting just 40 percent compared to Montgomery's almost 70 percent.

"It felt good to pick up our first win," Surovec said.

Next up for the Mustangs is a road clash Saturday afternoon at Harrisburg Area Community College. Tip-off is set for 3 pm.
