Recap: Men Drop Home Opener To RCGC, 109-91

BLUE BELL, Pa. - Turnovers and fouls doomed the men's basketball team in its home opener Thursday as the Mustangs fell 109-91 to the Roadrunners of Rowan College at Gloucester County in Region XIX action Thursday night.

Jalil Shafi led the Mustangs with 23 points on a night in which the team saw four of its players foul out down the stretch.

"We showed good effort again tonight, but turnovers and fouls continue to plague us," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Denny Surovec.

It was a tight see-saw affair for much of the first half. RCGC pulled ahead late but the Mustangs closed to within 8 points before the break as the Roadrunners took a 51-43 lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs stormed back in the early part of the second half and were within five at 76-71 with a little over 10 minutes to play. But Montgomery could not get over the hump in dropping its second straight game to start the season.

Montgomery shot 41 percent from the field, while RCGC shot 51 percent from the field, with Vincent Anfield leading all scorers with 36 points.

Both teams were solid from the foul line, but the Mustangs converted just 10 of 28 shots from beyond the arc compared to RCGC's 5 of 15 opportunities. The Roadrunners edged the Mustangs in the rebound department by a 48-40 margin.

Nicko Balis was second on the Mustangs in scoring with 17 points, including five three-pointers. He added 5 assists. Kanen Horton posted 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Anthony Patterson chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds. Shafi, Kevin Woods and Tyler Armstrong each pulled down 5 rebounds. Woods added 5 steals and Armstrong was credited with 3 blocked shots.

The men's basketball team is back on the road Tuesday, Nov. 10 in an 8 pm tip-off at Lehigh Carbon Community College.
