Seventh seeded Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's basketball team defeated tenth seeded Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Bulldogs 85-61 in the NJCAA Region XIX First Round game Saturday.
In the teams' most recent meet up prior to the playoff showdown, the Bulldogs came out with a strong first half lead, from which the Mustangs never recovered. However, in playoff action it was the Mustangs who charged ahead early in the game to lead 19-8 over the Bulldogs.
Play was a back and forth battle through much of the first half, with the Bulldogs eventually catching up to make the match a one-point game. Ending up at a 31-38 disadvantage going into half time, the Bulldogs tried to regroup and steal the lead back.
But the Mustangs held on to the advantage and surged with a big push in the second half, spreading a huge double-digit gap over the opposition. The Bulldogs couldn't get another rally going and ultimately lost the game by 24.
Three Mustangs earned double-doubles in the contest, led by second year sophomore Dexter Shy (Lansdale, Pa.) who racked up 18 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Steve Kulp (Telford, Pa.) collected 15 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks, while first year teammate Chris Uhrich (Harleysville, Pa.) notched 12 points and 13 rebounds. The team's other sophomore player, Tre Budd (Lansdale, Pa.), also had a solid game, adding 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the effort.
The Mustangs will now move on to the NJCAA Region XIX Quarterfinals, which will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m. The team will travel to Delaware County Community College to take on the number two seeded Phantoms (24-5 overall, 14-0 Region XIX).
