Game Recap: Men's Basketball Earns Victory Over Vikings

The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's basketball team defeated the Ocean County College Vikings 93-83 Thursday evening.

The Mustangs got off to a rough start, allowing the Vikings to run up a 10-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game. But the home team ramped up the effort to overtake the Vikings 13-12 at the 13:11 mark. Once the Mustangs secured the lead, they carried it through to half time, sending the Vikings to the locker room in a 32-44 hole.

The Mustangs started the second half with a 12 point lead, but slowly lost that cushion as the Vikings chipped away at it. With 7:30 remaining on the clock the Vikings' Marquis Mitchell grabbed a steal for a break away down the court. The effort resulted in a slam dunk that put the Vikings ahead 65-64. However, Mitchell hung on the rim too long drawing a technical foul, which allowed the Mustangs to regain the lead off two made free throws from freshman Nick Demeno. The two teams swapped control for the next minute before the Mustangs pulled ahead to seal the deal with the 10 point victory.

Leading the Mustangs was sophomore transfer Ron Melton with a double-double of 40 points and 10 assists. Scoring 40 points in a single game is a new historical record for the Mustangs. Melton also garnered eight rebounds in the win. Following him was Tre Budd with 13 points and six rebounds, Steve Kulp with 11 points and eight rebounds and Jahlil Shafi with 10 points.

Next the Mustangs will travel to Mercer County Community College on Tuesday Dec. 10th. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
