Game Recap: Men's Basketball Tops Johnson 97-79

The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's basketball team defeated the Jaguars of Johnson College 97-79 Saturday.

The Mustangs racked up a 12-2 opening lead in the match up, but faltered over the course of the first ten minutes of the game. By 11:36 the Mustangs lost the 10 point lead to trail the Jaguards 21-22. The teams battled back and forth for control of the game while the Jaguars held onto a 2-4 point lead through the middle of the half.

The Mustangs rallied on the backs of freshmen Nick Demeno, Marquis McClam and Alex Brown, who collectively notched 14 points in the next three minutes. The effort ignited the home team and put the Mustangs ahead 35-29 by the 6:00 mark. For the rest of the period, the Jaguars only managed to post six more points, while the Mustangs almost tripled that with 17.

Going into the second half ahead 52-35, the Mustangs continued their domination of the game. Just over half way through the second half, the Mustangs had racked up a 28 point lead. As the game concluded the Jaguars bounced back a bit, but could not make up the difference. Ultimately, the Jaguars lost by 18, giving the Mustangs the 97-79 victory.

The Mustangs performed well as a unit, earning averages of over 50.0% in field goals, three pointers and free throws. Sophomore transfer Ron Melton led the Mustangs with a double-double of 23 points and 13 assists. He also contributed six rebounds and five steals in the effort. Freshman Steve Kulp also tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Demeno totaled 16 points, 12 of which were earned off four three-point shots made in the first half. Also contributing big numbers in the win were McClam with 12 points and five assists and Brown with 10 points.

Next the Mustangs take on the Centurions of Bucks County Community College at home on Tuesday. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
