Men's Basketball Sets School Record with 121-77 Win

The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs defeated the Luzerne County Community College Trailblazers 121-77 Saturday. Totaling 121 points in one game is a school record for the Mustangs, breaking the previous record of 113 against Reading Area Community College set on Saturday January 15, 2011.

The Mustangs took hold of the game right off the opening tip off, as they built up a commanding 40-15 lead. The Trailblazers gave full effort to get back into it, but could only recover to a 20 point span of 57-37 by half time.

In the second half the Mustangs continued to dominate, posting 64 points to Luzerne's 40. The game culminated in a 121-77 victory for the Mustangs, who are now 1-1-0 overall and undefeated early in the season in Region XIX.

Sophomore transfer Ron Melton led the Mustangs with 28 points, five rebounds and five assists. Teammates Steve Kulp and Jalil Shafi also stepped up earning double-doubles in the win. Kulp knocked in 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Shafi tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The all around effort from the Mustangs squad was seen by a wide spread of points and rebounds. Highlighted performers from the team include guards Nick Demeno and Tre Budd, who totaled 16 and 13 points respectively. Also playing well were freshman Alex Brown, who ended the evening with 14 points and six rebounds, and Chris Uhrich, who collected eight points and five rebounds.

"This was a total team effort today," commented 6th season Head Coach Denny Surovec. "With the injuries we've had, a lot of guys stepped up to give us a much-needed boost. We did a good job establishing our offense early in the game. I am also proud of the fact that we played unselfish, team basketball throught the game."

The Mustangs play again Tuesday, facing off against Region XIX member Lehigh Carbon Community College. The game is home at 6:00 p.m.
