Baseball's four game winning streak was about to be put to the test as the team traveled to the NJCAA Division three seventh-ranked team in the country on Tuesday. The Mustangs were ready for a fight and they got one.
The beginning of the game looked great for the Mustangs, who saw themselves with a 2-0 lead in the third inning. However, the Spartans rose to the challenge and exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the third, including three straight home runs.
The Mustangs were facing a huge deficit, but they refused to give up, batting fairly consistently and bringing the score to 10-6 in the fifth. But Northampton wouldn't let them back in the game that easily. The Spartans put up another seven runs in two innings and just forced the ten run rule in the seventh inning, with a final score of 18-8.
The eight runs that the Mustangs scored on the nationally ranked Spartans was tied for the second most runs the team had allowed all season. Mike Kelly (FR, Pope John Paul) contributed two of those runs, while his former Pope John Paul teammate, Colt Narciso (FR) batted in two RBIs in the loss.
Next, the Mustangs will take on NCAA Division III Cabrini's JV team at home on Thursday.
