Montgomery took on Bergen County College, the third ranked NJCAA Division III team in the county, on Saturday in a double header. Both games were competitive and Montgomery certainly played to the level of the nationally ranked Bulldogs.
Game one was a bit sloppy for both teams. They both grabbed one run in the second, Montgomery's coming off of an RBI single from Ron Fausnaught. However, scoring would be sparse from there. Great pitching from Aaron Benner lead to the score still being tied heading to the fourth. However, Bergen grabbed a single run in the fourth, sixth and seventh to take a three run lead.
What seems to be the regular story for a Montgomery loss this season, the Mustangs left 11 on base, which contributed to their scoring woes. Despite outhitting the Bulldogs by one hit, Montgomery dropped the first game 4-1.
What also seems to be a regular story for the Mustangs is fighting even harder in game two after a loss in game one. Devon Crossin started game two against the No. 3 team in the country with only 12 IP and a 10.50 ERA. In a true underdog story, Crossin was pitching a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
Montgomery was up 1-0, thanks to Aaron Benner's run off of a Bergen error. But the Mustangs would not stop at one, adding five runs in the fourth inning, all scored with 2 outs. Tyler Groff had a two run RBI and Logan Curley continued his streak of great hitting with a 3 RBI triple.
There was no way that Devon Crossin was going to be taken out of the game on a no-hitter and he continued his excellent pitching all the way to the 6th inning. Bergen loaded the bases on one out due to a few walks and an HBP by Crossin, but they were still without a hit. An incredible grab into a double play by Aaron Benner with those loaded bases finished the inning and kept Crossin's no-hitter alive.
All that was left was the seventh, where Bergen went 1-2-3 and Crossin struck out the last batter to complete his no-hitter and Montgomery won the game, 6-0. This is Montgomery's first win this season against a top-5 team and it could not have been done in a better fashion
These games move the Mustangs to 10-13 on the season. Montgomery is back in action on Tuesday when they take on the Williamson College of the Trades at 3:30pm.
Devin Crossin - 7 IP, 5 K, 0 H, 0 R, 0.00 ERA
