Mustangs Baseball: Opening Day for 2016-2017 Season

The Mustangs Montgomery County Community College Baseball team is just days away from the official start of the 2016-2017 season.

Opening day will be away on Sunday, March 26th at 12:00 p.m. in a double header event. The Mustangs will hit the road early to play against the Dukes of Cumberland County College in Vineland, NJ.

Former Assistant Coach Mike Fitzgerald will start his first year as the Mustangs Head Coach, coming back from a 10-2 overall record last season. Montgomery County Community College is pleased to have Coach Fitzgerald part of the Intercollegiate program, as he wants all student-athletes to have success on and off the field.

Coach Fitzgerald is equipped with a 17 man roster that will have 26 competition games, 10 of which are within the conference this year. His returning sophomores include Nick Mikesic and Joseph Stankovics.

Coach Fitzgerald mentions that the team is anxious to get the season underway and they have been working hard starting back in January.

Prior to game one, the Mustangs are making preparations, as the Cumberland CC Dukes are off to a fast start, with a record of 17-3. Cumberland is plating almost 9 runs per game while allowing a little over 2.

As part of the Mustangs' game strategy, Coach Fitzgerald comments, "We believe in the philosophy that pitching and defense is what wins games. Our pitching staff has worked hard and is ready and they know they have the defense to back them up."

Sophomore Joseph Stankovics and Freshman Paul Mudrick will have the hill duties for the twin bill. Backing Stankovics and Mudrick up in the field will be returning sophomore and Captain Nick Mikesic, Dan Janoson, Joneur Nieves, Ty Wolfel, Justin Wieand, William Clarke, Kyle Callahan and Adam McKinlay.

"From the first day we got outside, I could see the chemistry building with our team," concluded Coach Fitzgerald. He sees a great group of guys and with all the work they put into practices, the results will be there.

The Mustangs are members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX and the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC). Fans are encouraged to follow the Mustangs at and on Facebook and Twitter
