Recap: Mustangs Squander Early Lead, Lose 9-7

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - Zach Zappo drove in three runs, but the visiting Mustangs let an early five-run lead slip away in falling 9-7 to the host Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.

Montgomery jumped on Lehigh Carbon starting pitcher Jeff Charles early, scoring five times in the top of the second. However, Charles settled down after that while the Cougars' hitters roughed up Mustangs' pitcher Tyler Markovic.

Markovic and Co. allowed three runs in the third, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth as Lehigh Carbon turned the tables and built a four-run lead. Tim Hughes and Tanner Stufflet combined for five hits and six RBI in the Cougars' three-inning offensive.

The Mustangs answered with a pair of runs in their half of the seventh but fell short in the end.

Charles struck out 10 in recording the win for the Cougars.

Markovic doubled and finished with two hits, along with Will Brownlowe and Jason Smith. Nick Purshock scored a pair of runs and was credited with an RBI. As a team, the Mustangs stole six bases on the day.

Montgomery is back home Thursday when it hosts Delaware County Community College. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
